CEI is a well-established brand in Ophthalmology in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and internationally. Registered in 1996, the Caribbean Eye Institute has been enjoying twenty-three years of leadership in local and regional Ophthalmology. The foundation was laid by Dr. Deo Singh beginning in the early 80s. He did the first intra ocular lens cataract surgery at a local hospital in February 1984. In the following month, he conducted Trinidad and Tobago’s first Consensual Human Organ Donor transplant, a corneal graft, at the Port of Spain General Hospital. In 1986 he introduced biometry in cataract surgery to improve the predictability of refractive outcomes. In 1996 CEI provided the first phacoemulsification cataract surgery and IOL Master biometry to further enhanced outcomes from 2003. In 2001 CEI embarked on laser refractive surgery in partnership with Dr. Anirudh Mahabir and the late Dr. Anthony Fraser.
The first group practice in Ophthalmology in Trinidad and Tobago, CEI is a multi-specialty Ophthalmology practice with care provided by five Ophthalmologists. We cater for general Ophthalmology, paediatrics, medical retina, surgical retina, cataract, corneal surgery and external diseases of the eye. The company boasts of having the only resident team of Medical and Surgical retina specialists. CEI also has an in-house team of anterior segment and posterior segment eye surgeons. This team has provided the only known option in the Caribbean for patients needing combined corneal transplant, lens replacement and vitrectomy surgery.
On the wings of it’s successes, the company has a manifest social conscience through services extended, pro bono, to patients who could not afford fee-for-service eye surgery. This has been in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, Regional Health Authorities, Medical Associates Hospital, the Medical Association of Trinidad and Tobago, Rotary and Lions Clubs and other NGOs.
